     1-2-3 SOCIAL! Reflection -- August '14

    What you were there for, what you might not have paid attention to, or what you wished you would have been there for
    (and didn't your English teacher tell you to NEVER end a phrase with a preposition?!?!?!?!)
    ~~~~/\~~~~~/\~~~~/\~~~~~~/\~~~~~/\~~~~~/\~~~~~
    August 27, 2014 ... The River House, Moline
    ....approx. 90 QCPHers in attendance.
    Charity Component – Tube socks for Stand Down … and QC Parrot Heads are just amazing! A total of 459 PAIRS of socks were collected to help homeless veterans.
    50/50: You’d better sit down for this one … Kathy Koester did not win. I know, I know … total shock. This month’s winner is Janet Lindstrom, who won $223 of the $445 total (that amount being yet ANOTHER amazing QC Parrot Head fact). Janet chose Winnie’s Place to be the recipient of the other $222.
    Also – Whomever was in charge of the beautiful weather that allowed the Social to take place outside at the River House … Bravo!
    First, this month’s news –
    The August Social marked the presentation of another BIG check. OK, it wasn’t the big one that is always worthy of a photo opp, but it certainly was BIG in the fact that it was for $4,100 – proceeds of the annual QCPH Golf Outing, this year held at Saukie Golf Course on June 28. The recipient was Christian Care, and Ann Ring, grants and donor relations coordinator for Christian Care was on hand to excitedly receive the check.
    “We are thrilled!” said Ms. Ring. “This money will provide professional counseling for 30 children that we serve (in dealing with domestic violence). Your donation will help them in overcoming their past trauma.”
    “I want to give a big thank you to the volunteers to help put together the golf outing on short notice,” said TJ Griffiths, a co-chair of the event. “You all did a fabulous job! In fact, I’m going to say that I will put my toes in the water for next year and chair the golf outing again.” Plus, Christine Martinez added her toes to that same sand and will help TJ in running the 2015 QCPH Golf Outing.
    TJ also gave a shout-out to Brian Wilson for helping spearhead the golf-outing sponsorships. In fact, there were at least TWO sponsor placards for each of the 18 holes this year!
    New member: Brooke Mitchell of Davenport joined on the Cubs-Cardinals Bus Trip in July (and actually was the winner of the new-member drawing on the bus for the Ernie Banks Autographed Baseball!)  Welcome Brooke --1-2-3 Social!!
    Mark Your Calendars!
    Saturday, Sept. 13: The next opportunity for the QCPH Highway Cleanup. Meet at City Limits on 9th Street at 9 a.m. It should take about an hour for the cleanup along Blackhawk Road.
    Sunday, Sept. 14: The annual Feeding Frenzy, which will be at Ridgewood Towers in East Moline. Volunteers, which are needed, should show up at 3:30 p.m., with serving the elderly at 5 p.m. Those who wish to donate pies (and sugar-free pies are needed as well) but cannot stay to volunteer can drop those off at Ridgewood Towers at 3 p.m. Those wishing to volunteer who have not already signed up can contact Breanne Jayleen via Facebook.
    “This is one of the most rewarding things we do,” says Social Director Mike Koester. “The joy on the faces of the elderly we serve is well worth the time put in.”
    Monday, Sept. 15: The next planning meeting for Havana Daydreamin’, 6 p.m. at Legends on 30th Street, Rock Island. Of particular note is that the committee is in urgent need of about six QC parrotheads willing to address envelopes and make followup calls for auction items. Last year only 3 volunteers did this job and it was overwhelming. More volunteer help on this is a must if we are to continue having such a successful event. PLEASE step forward and help. Contact either President Willy Fink, HDD chairmen Marc Nesseler and Tina Sims or auction chair Anke Maass.
    Saturday, June 20: Time for a Road Trip. The Isle of Iowa’s “Island Fever Phlocking” fundraiser will be from 5:30 p.m. to midnight at the Coralville Mariott. It’s charity will be the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. Go to the Isle of Iowa’s Facebook page for details about tickets and hotel stays.
    Sunday, Sept. 28: Just added Wednesday night from the Social because Quad Cities Marathon race director Joe Moreno was dining outdoors at the River House at the same time as the Parrotheads. Joe asked if the QC Parrotheads would be willing to man one of the 15 water stations during the marathon and by the look of a show of hands, it appears that will happen.
    “I am hoping that the Quad City Parrotheads will take ownership of that particular area of the race, and I would love it if the Parrot Head Club would have the best one of them all,” said Moreno. Yeah, you can get he knows of the club’s penchant for having a good time while serving the community!
    UPCOMING SOCIAL
    * Wednesday, Sept. 24 – Bier Stuebe in LeClaire. Social director Mike Koester announced that Bier Stuebe will provide live entertainment. Charity component: Bottled water for Rock Island County Children’s Advocacy Center.
    1-2-3 SOCIAL! Reflection --   June '14
    What you were there for, what you might not have paid attention to,
     or what you wished you would have been there for
    (and didn't your English teacher tell you to NEVER end a phrase with a preposition?!?!?!?!)
    ~~~~/\~~~~~~~/\~~~~~~~~/\~~~~~~~~~~/\~~~~~~~/\~~~~~~~~/\~~~~~~~

    June 26, 2014 ................. Buffalo Wild Wings, Davenport  .....................approx. 70 QCPHers in attendance.

    Charity Component – The annual box fan drive for Project Now. The club collected 35 fans which will assist the needy during the summer months.

    50/50: The smartest parrot head of the night was Karen Miles. She offered to split a 50-50 purchase with Kathy Koester, who has won something like the last 43 50-50s (exaggerating only a little). Of course, Kathy won again, for the second straight Social and throw in the Mixology drawing to boot and it comes as no surprise at all. Even drowning her tickets in beer before the drawing had zero jinx effect. With $360 raised, Kathy and Karen received $160 (for the second straight Social) and the other $160 was designated for Hand-In-Hand’s summer camp.

    One other note: The staff at BWW in Davenport was excellent. In fact, they were this excellent – some waitresses helped carry the box fans out to the vehicle for delivery to WQAD on Thursday.

    Also, Wednesday was an even bigger charity night. Ten percent of the food/drink bills of parrot heads will be donated to QCPH Charities by BWW! Yes, we will be taking advantage of that opportunity again in the coming year!

    Success Stories

    • Tickets to the 2015 Havana Daydreamin’ went on sale on Wednesday and, as expected, they are HOT. Only 12 of the 30 reserved tables ($240) remain after just 10 hours of the availability starting online. Tables and individual tickets ($25 each) are available at the website, www.qcph.com.

    • The 2nd annual QCPH Mixology Night was, indeed, a big success, raising $525 for charity and with an increase of 25 percent in attendance over the first Mixology. Big thanks to Social Director Mike Koester for serving up the special concoctions.

    • The 8th annual QCPH Golf Outing was another big success. We had 47 golfers at Saukie in Rock Island and we certain to raise big money for Christian Care. Look for the check presentation for that at the July Social. Big thanks to T.J. Griffith and Sue Wesselmann for co-chairing the event, and the success of the outing as even more impressive given the late start we had on organizing it.

    • New member: We have one this month – Linda Holuba of Eldridge. Welcome!

    A full calendar for the summer!

    • June 28: Jimmy Buffett Concert in Chicago.

    • June 28: For those not going to the Buffett Concert, Sunny Jim White will be playing at the Tiki Bar in Burlington, Iowa. The Southeast Iowa PHC will be putting on the potluck and it will start at 6 p.m. Cost is $20 which will go to the musician.

    • n  July 9: Parrot Head Night at the Quad City River Bandits. The parrot head ticket rate is $8, but make sure you mention the QC Parrot Head Club when ordering tickets to get that price.

    • July 9-13: John Deere Classic Parking by the QC Parrot Head Club. Anke Maas is heading up this charitable event that has raised thousands of dollars for QCPH charities each year that we have been involved. We particularly need volunteer help for the Wednesday of the JDC (July 9). Not is the camaraderie fun, but volunteers also receive free JDC tickets!

    • July 17: The regular monthly business meeting at the downtown Rock Island ‘clubhouse.’

    • July 19: QCPH will be grand marshals of the Walcott Days Parade. Boat Drunks will play a free concert that night in Walcott. Plus there will be a band during the day. Organizers ask that you please patronize their beer, margarita and food tents. No outside food or drinks. Best news of all – Walcott Days will be constructing and tearing down the Parrot Head Float! All we need to do is sit on the float or walk next to it, pass out candy and dress tropically!

    • Also July 19: Sauce Boss at the Paddlewheel in Burlington. Starts at 7 p.m.

    • July 23: The July Social has been moved up a week – please make a note of that! – because the Mississippi Valley Fair is the following week.

    • n  July 26: The third annual Cubs-Cardinals bus trip to Wrigley Field. Sold out!

    • n  Aug. 16: Beer Pour’n at RME’s River Roots Live at the LeClaire Bandshell. All volunteer slots are filled, though there is a waiting list in case someone backs out. Thank you to Christine Martinez for organizing this.

    • Aug. 23: Jimmy Buffett at Alpine.

    • Sept. 14: This year’s Feeding Frenzy, always a most fun and most memorable event for QC parrot heads. It’s always one of the most memorable and cherished parrot head events. See event chairman Linda Anderson, Kathy Koester or Breanne Jayleen for volunteer opportunities.

    UPCOMING SOCIAL

    * Wednesday, July 23: Corner Grill in Blue Grass. Cool place – it has ice around the bar in which you can put your beer! Charity component: School supplies.

    Awesome news for the Quad City Parrot Head Club --
    The QCPH has been selected to be the Grand Marshals of the Walcott Days Parade on Saturday, July 19!
    The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. The club will need to know how many QCPH members intend to ride on the already-decorated float (thank you Walcott Days!) or walk alongside the float and pass out candy. The QCPH Float will be at the head of the parade!
    Please let Club President Willy Fink (weldn_willy@hotmail.com) know of your intent to participate.
    The Walcott Days festivities go all day at the park. There will be food and drinks available to purchase, including beer and margarita tents. There will be live entertainment during the day, AND THE BEST NEWS -- the Boat Drunks will be playing at 7 p.m., and there is no admission charge!

    From the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities

    Dear Friends,

    On behalf of our wonderful Honor Flight volunteers and especially those who answered our country's call to duty commonly called Veterans, we extend our deep, heartfelt THANKS for your so-generous gift of $30,000.00. This amount will cover the expense of allowing 60 WWII and Korean Veterans to experience a trip of a lifetime to see their memorials in Washington, D.C., later this year.

    Your group is a fantastic fellowship of fun-loving people who are "paying it forward" in amazing proportions. It is truly our pleasure to experience your friendship.

    Sincerely,
    Art Petersen, treasurer

    Hello Phlock,

    I know its almost summer and the weather is warm, but I wanted to get this information out pertaining to room reservations at the Isle of Capri for our 2015 Havana Day Dreaming event early so you could get them reserved early.

    If you are planning on going to HDD and want a room for either Friday night... March 27th or for the night of HDD March 28th, you must follow these instructions. Call 1-800-theisle (1-800-843-4753) and identify yourself as group code WQCP124 for the reservations, if you don't give them the code then you won't get the reduced rate and you won't be in the same tower as all the other people from our club and other clubs.

    (Note: The rate is $99.99 per night for a room occupancy of 2, not including taxes. For two nights, with taxes, the cost is $220. Make sure you use the Group Code.) There is an additional $10 charge per person, so if you have more than two in your room, adjust the charge accordingly.

    Please remember there are only going to be a limited amount of tickets sold for next years event so don't delay. More information will follow in the coming months. I will also send this out this notification multiple times as well during the upcoming months.

There also were cash donations of $40.

    50/50: Kathy Koester (no shock there, in fact she sheepishly announced that she had the winning ticket, fearful of reprisal for having won so often) won $180, with $360 being raised. She donated the other half to the QC Greyhound Adoption Group, making it a total cash donation of $220!!
